The Bridges of Madison County – Iowa

Early in 2010, I read The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller and it was by far one of my favorite books.  So when we chose a route for our trip, I pondered a way to fit Iowa in there so we could visit the five Bridges of Madison County!

At the end of the day, we were racing against sunlight, but we were able to visit all five bridges with a gorgeous sunset to boot.  Iowa is a beautiful state, and we shall one day visit Winterset again for a longer amount of time.  It was sad to see a bit of graffiti and vandalism on a few of the bridges, but underneath that you could tell that care was taken to keep the bridges clean and true to history.

“It’s clear to me now that I have been moving toward you and you toward me for a long time. Though neither of us was aware of the other before we met, there was a kind of mindless certainty bumming blithely along beneath our ignorance that ensured we would come together. Like two solitary birds flying the great prairies by celestial reckoning, all of these years and lifetimes we have been moving toward one another.”
